FitBit Users: I think it’s trying to kill me

I LOVE my little FitBit. Love, love love. It’s adorable and keeps me honest about how much I moved in a day.

And in theory, the fact that it calculates how many calories you can eat in a day based on your fitness goals and movement is so cool!

But it wants to starve me. It always gives me only 900-1000 calories! Insane! I can’t figure out what I did wrong with the settings but it hates me and wants me to eat nothing.

Anyone else have this problem?

PALEO WEEK BEGINS!

So, so so so excited. For months I’ve been researching and experimenting with paleo/primal eating, but it’s just too hard when you’re making food for a loved one or family as well. It’s hard to get the support you need when someone wants to go out for pizza (and it’s way too easy to give in!)

But my fiance was reading one of his tech blogs, and the guy was talking about his experience with paleo, and he decided he’d be willing to try it. AWESOME. So we’re going full force this week, just bought everything we needed from pork chops to spinach to seven million eggs.

We’re using http://www.paleoplan.com/ to do our meal planning and shopping list - it’s actually a quite pretty website and I loved just having a giant list of exactly what to buy that corresponds with a calendar of what to eat, make, and snack on. It makes it really easy.

So this week is going to be fun. We decided to go all in, all or nothing. Workouts Mon, Weds, Thurs. After a week of eating and drinking like a slob at my work conference, it’ll be a nice detox.

Plus I can’t wait to see how he feels about the whole thing. I’ve been telling him for ages his allergies are probably related to what he’s eating, so I’m dying to see if he feels better and more energized after just one week of super clean eating (sans grains and sugar!)

Cool new app alert! Tech Crunch turned me onto this app yesterday called “The Eatery”. Basically, you snap a pic of your food before you start chomping down and rate it based on how much you’re eating and how healthy it is. Then, your anonymous peers will weigh in on what you ate to determine how healthy your meals are. Based on what time of day you eat and where you are, the app will begin to develop reports about your eating, possibly alerting you to triggers in your eating habits. It’s also a great way to keep accountable - you may THINK your hamburger and fries was healthy, but ultimately the community voting will have the final say.
I love the idea that you might find out you’re more prone to drink a soda at 3 pm or eat candy on a friday night - but one of my qualms with the app is how different all of our opinions are about what’s healthy. Since I’m eating a high fat, high protein, low carb diet, it should match me up with eaters of the same, otherwise, my peers will take one look at my bacon and avocado salad I had for lunch and vote me FAT over FIT. Likewise, I’ve been thumbs downing everyone’s Subway Sandwiches. So there’s a bit of work to do there. But moreso than anything, it’s to keep you accountable and not only learn more about your eating habits, but just see if you can eat better than you did yesterday.

Day 1 of whatever the heck I’m following:

Strawberries: 46
Cheddar slice: 80
Diet Lemonade: 60
Clementine: 35
Green tea: 0
Udon noodle soup: 220

Total: 440/500

Pretty close today. Thank goodness I planned a low count, because I was all excited the udon pkg was only 110!! ….per serving, total two. Bastards! Thwarted by serving counts again, so annoying. Anyway, I’m hungry and drinking green tea to combat the pangs. Day 1 down. Day 2 questionable because of a birthday party. Damn my socially active friends.

A blog about food. Since this IS a weight loss progress and inspiration blog, I figure I’ll blog about my struggles and achievements. I get annoyed when I read some blogs I follow and they’re not talking about what they’re DOING.

Yesterday’s food was good and bad.

I had an apple for breakfast (45cals), a mini babybel around 2:30 (70cals) and some Diet DP and TONS AND TONS OF WATER.

Then last night was my birthday party and I had lots of sushi and lots wine and a couple of shots and a watermelon margarita. (calories unknown but likely terrifying)

But I did it because it’s my birthday and I was having an amazing day. So now I’m working on today, just a banana so far.

I’ve started my official “diet” and it is a diet, because I’m planning on lifestyle changing after I lose a few. My body has plenty of fat to feed off of. And something I’ve done this week is working, because I’m down from 147 to 144.5 this morning. Woo! I just took my before shots which I’m guessing no one wants to see. I’ll put them up after I’ve made some progress.

The diet is: when I get hungry I eat fruit or a slice of cheese. The cheese is because I love salty snacks and I’ve read a lot recently about how full fat cheese is supposed to help with weight loss. Calcium and such. I bought mini babybel, and a 2 bags of individually wrapped cheeses - pepperjack and cheddar. That helps with my control, they’re 80 cals per slice. I’ll probably throw in a salad or carrots here and there, but mostly I’m just binging on fruit. And not even binging, it’ll be more like…eating. Sometimes.

I normally don’t feel hunger until the evening, and I’m trying to not eat past 7. I drink a ton of water at night and chew gum to quit thinking about it. It’s just a bad habit I’ve developed because I’m a night owl and I’d like to train my body to be on a more normal schedule. Working from home doesn’t really help the situation, I’ve discovered I “graze” a lot during the day.

The initial fruit diet can only last until the 12th. The 12th I leave town for work and I’ll be gone until the 18th, so that’s going to provide a ton of new challenges for me. If I see progress, I’ll keep it up. I’m thinking when I get to 130 I’m going to go back to a 1200 calorie diet and start the workout process. I expect if I’m diligent with this fruit thing I’ll be there by the end of June. I lose weight really quickly when I’m not eating.

A couple of summers ago, I was unemployed. I only drank slimfast, no solid foods, and I drank a TON of beer and wine. That was the plan - you can drink all the booze you want at night if you only have one slimfast a day. And I dropped like, 10 pounds. It was the skinniest I’d ever seen my arms. I wish I’d had a scale back then, who knows how tiny I was. So I’m not planning on giving up the booze this time either, I’ve read it helps somewhere and I’ll go with that. Plus, when you drink on an empty stomach your body starts burning those calories immediately.

I’m also taking B-12 right now, and I plan on going to the store later today to pick up some ACV pills. I’ve done slimquick pills before and they didn’t do a damn thing, so I figure actual vitamins are way better.

So far…so good. I feel great.

Finally got some good food up in this house.

I’m finally ready to get serious again. My haul tonight: strawberries, carrots, grapes, bananas, apples, three types of cheeses so I can get my calcium on, B-12, gum, water, diet DP, crystal light.

Get busy losing some fat now.
